Okay, so it wasn’t this crazy
So the last time I was at the National Book Store Warehouse Sale, it was a little crazy. To quote my blog post at the time:
“I spent about 10 minutes just looking in disbelief at the whole mass of people that was there at the Warehouse Sale so early in the morning. Who are these people and what did they do the night before? Did they camp out in front of Crossings or something?”
This time, I was once again invited to a preview, and since i’m not that stupid (also it was my rest day from work), I accepted the invitation and went there posthaste. And boy was it a good decision!
While there’s admittedly a lot of excitement fighting it out with a crowd for a book you really want – and actually winning that fight, too! – there’s also a lot to be said about walking into a sale with no one to fight with and having the luxury to just take your time.
Maybe because of that relaxed atmosphere, I was able to buy more books than i did two years ago. To wit:

As you all know, I am thirsty and lonely most of the time, so the first things I got for myself were these erotic novellas that INITIALLY were only P100 (what?) but then an angel from National Book Store employee approached me and marked them down to P30. What?!?
For those long, thirsty nights. Which means every night.
I also got copies of Danton Remoto’s Ladlad books and Gaydar for my friend Keannoid, who blog over at Pink Panties!
There were probably more copies as there were still A LOT of unopened boxes there.
The movie’s coming out now, and I really wanted to read the book first. AND I GOT IT JUST FOR P50.
Hopefully by the time I finish reading this, the movie’s still in theaters.
I also got this lovely collection of John LeCarre novels for only P75!
I already had Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, which I’ll probably have to give away now.
I also bought a hardcover copy of Margaret Atwood’s In OtherWorlds for P75, a hardcover copy of Carlos Ruiz Zafron’s The Prisoner of Heaven for P125, a hardcover copy of China Mieville’s Embassytown for P200, Jim Butcher’s Turn Coat for P20 (!), and Lauren Oliver’s Rooms for P75.
There were also a lot of books there that were on the cheap, but I didn’t end up buying as I already had copies of them. But some of you guys might be looking for them, so I thought you wouldn’t mind a little heads up!
Anne Rice’s Sleeping Beauty series is only P50 each, and you can get them with the fancy Classical painting covers, even! Definitely a much better read than the most current BDSM book of the moment – you know what I’m talking about – AND IT’S ONLY P50.
A hardcover copy of Maggie Stiefvater’s The Scorpio Races was also on sale there for only P100, and trust me when I say that’s a deal. It’s a really, really good book, and you should really be paying more than P100 for a book that good. (Read my review of it here!)
More BDSM! The Marquis de Sade’s Juliette was on sale just for P20! This was upwards of P700 when I first bought it, so you really shouldn’t miss out on this one if BDSM is something you’re into. The Divine Marquis, after all, is the one that lent his name to the S in BDSM.
The National Book Store Warehouse Sale will probably be in full swing by the time you guys read this post, but if you happen to be reading this as soon as it goes up, just a few pointers if you’re going to be heading there.
- There isn’t a rhyme or reason to the way the books are organized, or how they’re priced. I mention that I got Margaret Atwood’s In OtherWorlds for P75, but there was another copy of it there that was priced at P150. They were exactly the same copies, so I don’t know why the price difference. So I guess what you guys can take from this is to be fastidious about your search – keep an eye out for a copy of the same book at the cheaper tables.
- The venue is still dusty as all hell, so bring some wet wipes. I mean, it is a warehouse.
- While it was nice and cool when I was there, I don’t think it will be when it’s full of people. Please refer to the first few paragraphs of this post. Bring a fan or something. And sharp elbows, because you’ll probably be fighting with somebody for a book.
